Improv for Game Developers

It’s pretty common for actors to study improvisation to help them in their careers, but what about animators? It’ just as important for animators, who literally bring characters to life, to train their minds, bodies and imaginations as well, right?!

I was tasked by the animation team from the video game franchise, Diablo, to design and facilitate an improv workshop to help animators take the ideas in their heads and bring them to life. I led these artist through a variety of space, character, and choice exercises to help them explore environments more holistically.

The result? A great team building activity and workshop that delivered on the essential learning outcome: add tools to my toolbox to add specificity in my world building and character design by exploring improvisational techniques.

Toy Engineering & Design

The Hearthstone team was getting ready to celebrate the release of The Whizbang card pack, and they were looking for something thematic, fun, and educational to do to celebrate the occasion where they could also learn about engineering principles for future character designs. I collaborated with SMEs from 2-Bit Circus in Los Angeles, CA to create a simple toy-making workshop inspired by basic engineering principles. Participants designed some amazing “character toys” along with personalized narratives– a very fun and exciting experience was had by all!
